Join us as we kick-off the new semester with two of our most popular films from last semester: The Farewell (Lulu Wang, Mandarin/English 2019) and Mothers’ Instinct (Olivier Masset-Depasse, French 2019). For each of the screenings on Friday there will be drawings for prizes (t-shirts and totes) and food! Special Post-Screening Discussion with filmmaker Emelie Mahdavian

Special guest Emelie Mahdavian is coming to International Cinema Wednesday 6 November to discuss her work on the remarkable film, Midnight Traveler in a post-screening discussion following the 5pm screening of the film. (Discussion to start immediately after the film about 6:30pm.)

This event is co-sponsored by the Peery Film Festival/Ballard Center. Tickets are free, but should be reserved here.

Emelie is a filmmaker whose work often looks at women’s experience. She produced, wrote, and edited Midnight Traveler, which won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance 2019 and is nominated for a Gotham Award for Best Documentary. Emelie studied filmmaking at London Film School, and has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis. She is currently Producer in Residence in the Film and Media Arts at the University of Utah.

Special Guest: Astrid Tuminez (UVU President) at IC

International Cinema welcome UVU president Dr. Astrid Tuminez to lead a post-screening discussion of the Werner Herzog documentary Meeting Gorbachev this Wednesday (October 30) at 6.30pm immediately following the 5pm screening of the film. Dr. Tuminez graduated summa cum laude from BYU in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and Russian literature. She earned a master’s degree from Harvard University in Soviet Studies (1988) and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in political science (1996). Her post-screening discussion will be informed by years of work in the former Soviet Union including her interactions with former Soviet leaders.
